Northwood Vases - Part 7
NORTHWOOD VASES – Part 7
Vase lovers will have discovered our other segments surrounding the shape listed on our homepage. With six previous discussions on Northwood Vases, we believe this will have fairly well covered the gamut of those produced by Northwood. Vases are a favorite of some collectors, and certainly there are enough patterns, shapes and colors to create a display of several hundred examples. We trust that our information is of help to those who may have overlooked the variety extended in this singular aspect of collecting.
Left - TREE TRUNK Jardiniere - Amethyst - 8 inches tall.
Right - Green Elephant Foot-12 inches tall.
TREE TRUNK Jardiniere: This type is not seen with any frequency. It is the un-swung elephant’s foot vase.
The green example sitting beside the jardinière is only slightly swung, and certainly a very desirable color!
Elephant foot vases - Marigold (left) and Ice Green (right).
TREE TRUNK Elephant’s Foot:: 7 ½”-18 ½ ” , with a half dozen known in marigold. Amethyst, green, ice green and cobalt blue are additional colors known.
Mid-Size TREE TRUNK - Blue and Amethyst.
Mid-Size TREE TRUNK - Green and Lime Green.
Mid-Size TREE TRUNK - Marigold and Cobalt Blue.
TREE TRUNK Mid-Size: 11”-14”: marigold, amethyst, green, cobalt blue, ice blue, ice green, aqua opalescent, lime green, horehound, sapphire blue, marigold on custard, and iridized blue slag (one known).

TREE TRUNK Standard Size: 8”-12”: marigold, amethyst, green, cobalt blue, white, ice blue, ice green, sapphire blue, aqua opalescent, teal are the known colors.
One of the two green examples seen here, appears to have been “re-shaped”, perhaps following breakage?? You decide.
Sapphire Opal Diamond Point.
DIAMOND POINT : This is basically sapphire in color, with a bit of opal for “exclamation”!
Drapery in Aqua Opal and Drapery Variant in Green.
DRAPERY & DRAPERY Variant: The main trick to collecting Drapery vases is to find examples which have perfect “toe projections”! Colors in the Drapery pattern which should be classified as rarely found: Aqua, teal, sapphire blue, aqua opalescent, and lime green. Drapery Variant vases in green with Alaskan finish are “off the charts”!
Mid-size THIN RIB in Marigold and JIP THIN RIB in Amethyst.
Courtesy J&C Curtis
THIN RIB/ Jack-in-the-pulpit: The marigold mid-size has a base size of 4 ¼”-4 ½”. They are usually 11”-15” in height. Marigold is not unusual, but having strong color, makes it inviting!.
JIP shapes have a 3”-3 ½” base diameter. They are found in marigold, amethyst, green, cobalt blue and teal. Results of the extremely flared top can create variation in appearance.
Flute Vases in Green, Vaseline and Alaskan Finish.
FLUTE Vase: These vases are actually part of a different Northwood line than the designs found on berry, water, and breakfast sets, but for the sake of familiarity, we will discuss it here. Marigold and green are not plentiful, but seen more often than amethyst. Height is between 8” and 14”. Some green vases offer the Alaskan iridescent finish. A Vaseline example adds greatly to any vase collection!
Corn vases in Blue and Aqua Opal.
CORN VASES: We have discussed these vases in previous segments listed in our pattern alphabet, but since this blue example is thought to be only the second one reported, we decided to display it.
We could not conclude a discussion on Northwood Vases without displaying this gorgeous aqua opalescent example. Not often available, one such as this could easily sell for more than $1,000!
Dean & Diane Fry. 7- 2012
My son, if you receive my words, and treasure my commands within you, so that you incline your ear to wisdom,
And apply your heart to understanding, yes, if you cry out for discernment, and lift up your voice for understanding,
If you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will understand the fear of the Lord,
And find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding;
He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; He is a shield to those who walk uprightly….
When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, discretion will preserve you;
Understanding will keep you, to deliver you from the way of evil, from the man who speaks perverse things,
from those who leave the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness; who rejoice in doing evil,
and delight in the perversity of the wicked; whose ways are crooked, and who are devious in their paths;
to deliver you from the immoral woman………
So you may walk in the way of goodness, and keep to the paths of righteousness.
For the upright will dwell in the land, and the blameless will remain in it;
but the wicked will be cut off from the earth, and the unfaithful will be uprooted from it. (Proverbs 2)
