Left - SACRED HEART OF JESUS Votive by Crystalis of Mexico.
Right - Opposite Side Depicts the CROSS. Maker mark on bottom - M within C.
VOTIVE - SACRED HEART OF JESUS: Hartung Book 8 indicates that this same votive light is shown in a catalog offering church goods, in non-iridescent ruby glass. That catalog is dated 1916. The Crystalis-Mexico trademark is found on the underside of the base. The votive is 4 1/8” high, with a top diameter of 2 5/8”. The stem is solid. The domed base measures 2 1/8” across. The only color found in this symbolically portrayed, Bleeding Heart of Jesus is a strong marigold. Roman Catholics will recognize the small cross on top, and the crown of thorns around the heart. These votives have been found with small amounts of candle wax in the bottom of the container enabling us to pin-point its original purpose.
SOUVENIR MUG-Amboy, MN.
3.5 in. tall - (Flashed marigold).
SOUVENIR MUG, Amboy, MN: 3 ½”-3 ¾” tall, with a top diameter of 2 3/8”, sloping to 1 ¾” at the base, we can grasp the tiny stature of this piece. The base is depressed upwards, with a raised rayed star impressed into it. This little mug will hold exactly ½ cup of liquid.
The account offered in Hartung Book 6 describes a couple of similar patterns made by McKee Glass Co. in 1894, neither of which have been carried over for use in the Carnival Glass era, apparently. This particular mug with raised dots down the length of the handle is very likely another after-market iridizing effort.

June 1916 Butler Bros. Wholesale Catalog Ad.
ALLIGATOR: This approx. 10” long amber example has hexagon shaped eyes and resembles the shorter one shown in the Butler Bros. ad. Design detail and iridization makes this curiosity very attractive. The Tate’s hope that some viewer will be informed of its origin and are eager to learn more about their recent purchase.

“JENNY LIND” POWDER BOX: When Jerry sent pictures of this piece, asking what we might know about it, our only recollection was of a couple of round and square similar examples which sat on my Grandmother’s dressing table when I (Diane) was a child in the late ‘30s. They were not iridized, but the molds would likely remain available into the carnival glass era we are all familiar with. Somehow the lime green base glass casts a more recent “glimmer” of reality. An iridized amber glass example has recently appeared on eBay. Molds have found their way across many waters following closure of glass plants in America. Not to worry! Appreciation for the lovely and unusual continues.
Aug. ’10 Update: The design is seen in Fostoria by: Patrick McGrain, pg. 53. Jenny Lind was a famous 1860’s actress. Fostoria issued the box in 1903 in white & pink milk glass only. Circa 1955-65, it was reissued in white milk glass.

American Prescut in AZTEC Design seen Page 232, McKee Book.
HEART INTAGLIO: The Complete Book on McKee displays several pages of various shapes produced in this Aztec design; all of them in clear crystal glass. Presznick Book 2, page 32, plate 118, describes this heart shaped piece as Heart Intaglio (Hob Star & Leaf Wreath). It is shown in 3 sizes: 7-8”, 8-9”, & 9-10”. A marigold example was displayed in the Presznick Museum.
SOUVENIR BANDED MUG.
New Annan, Nova Scotia - 3.25 in. tall.
SOUVENIR BANDED MUG: Hartung Book 8 details this design as seen in a 1914 clear glass tumbler catalog. The mug shown is marigold with a clear handle, standing 3 ½” high, a top diameter of 2 3/8”. The flat hexagonal base is 1 5/8” across. Just as there were after-market iridizers of that time period, so there were fairs/carnivals with available print applicators suited to the location at hand. The example used by Mrs. Hartung carried the lettering: “Souvenir of Kourdup, Montana.”
TINY DERBY 3 in. long. Blue.
TINY DERBY Hat: This little blue hat was a part of the late Eleanor Hamilton collection. We know of no other examples.
SOUVENIR - Milbridge, ME - 3.25 in. high.
SOUVENIR MUG: This is obviously a child’s mug, probably produced in clear glass, with the band of flashed marigold added by after-market application to enhance the lettering. State Fairs were famous into the 1940s for selling such items for “remembrance” sake.
Large EAGLE Bank - 6 x 5.5 in. - Small Bank is 4.25 x 4 in. in size.
EAGLE Banks: Who and when these were made is not known, but “coin savers” as such have been used by “tots of varying ages” as a thrifty device for many a long day. Were they flashed with marigold? Very likely.
