Fenton HOLLY
Steve Fink is an avid collector and researcher of this pattern. He finds the progression of the Holly pattern over an active twenty or more years of production, quite a fascinating subject. Objects of nature were applied to many of the early molds. Transportation in the early 1900s was not so accessible as today. With the glass industry centered among the hills and mountains of PA and WV, the artisans of that day simply utilized objects they were familiar with and came in contact with each day. The Holly design is no exception.
The late Frank M. Fenton worked closely with now deceased William Heacock in producing Fenton Glass-The First Twenty-five Years in 1978. That book displays a circa 1910 Butler Brothers wholesale catalog ad for “VENETIAN ART” Iridescent Asst. which includes the ruffled Holly Hat shape as we know it to be. A 1911 catalog ad displays Carnival Holly bon-bons (#508). The photograph of that oval bon-bon reveals the shape carnival glass collectors call a hat-shape.
9 ½” Holly plates (#208), were circa 1911, as were 3/1 edge bowls in 9 ¼” and IC shaped bowls in 8 ¼” (#208). The numbers in parentheses are the mold numbers; #208 being one in the same for both bowls and the plates.
Sometimes included in Butler Brothers catalog ads under the heading: “Magnet Asst.”, “Golden Irid.”, “Our Marvelous Irid. Asst.”, or “Royal Iridescent Novelty Glassware Asst.”, the shapes were offered from introduction in the Butler Brothers Santa Claus Edition of 1910, through the `teens, right on into the Roaring Twenties when examples of the ruffled, 3/1 edge bowls, hats and compotes were all produced in red.
The 3/1 edge bowl offered in golden iridescent or blue appeared in a 1924 Butler Bros. ad. A Mid-Winter 1927 ad carried that same bowl offered in Golden Iridescent. The final ad in our beloved carnival glass appeared in 1929. Quite suddenly, iridescent carnival glass disappeared from the Butler Brothers catalogs, giving way to a new trend.
That same 3/1 edge Holly bowl shape was carried over into 1930 production of “Marvelous” Rose-Pink, along with 11 other famously popular Fenton patterns.

Ruffled or three-and-one edge bowls about 9” in size have an unbelievable color range! Amber, amethyst, black amethyst, amberina, aqua, aqua opal, blue, powder blue, blue opal, green, ice green, lavender, lime, marigold, marigold/moonstone, peach opal, purple, red, teal, vaseline and white.

Ice cream shape or round bowls are known in amethyst, black amethyst, aqua, blue, celeste, green, ice blue, ice green, lime marigold, marigold/moonstone, vaseline and white.
Note: Nut bowl shape has the edge flare.

Plates, 9”-10” in size, are found in amethyst, black amethyst, aqua opal, blue, celeste, green, marigold, pale marigold, teal, and white.

(ONE KNOWN VINTAGE RED 9” PLATE) has remained in the same collection for at least 50 years!!!!!!!!. (There MAY be some examples which have previously been BOWLS, prior to “Johnny-Come-Lately Makeovers”! BEWARE of scorched, peculiar exterior markings!)

Compotes can be ruffled, goblet shape, banana boat shape or flared and round in shape. Amber, amethyst, black amethyst, aqua, cobalt blue, powder blue, green, lavender, lime, lime opal, marigold, pink, red, red opal, vaseline, violet, white and a yellow-green base glass.

Green ruffled Pepper Plant Hat. - 6.25 in. across x 3 25 in. high.
Hat Shapes have always been favorites, whether ruffled, CRE, or JIP shape. These hats can be square, four-sided or have two sides up. Holly hats can be found in amethyst opal, aqua, aqual opal, amber, amberina, blue, green, lime green, marigold, powder blue, red, vaseline, violet, are colors to look for.
Pepper Plant hats are quite similar and often mistaken for Holly hats, but if you look closely, the plant design is different. Further observation confirms that Holly hats have a round base while Pepper Plant hats can only be found with a hexagonal base. Pepper Plant hat colors are amethyst, blue, green, lavender, marigold and vaseline.
