Hatpins - Part 7
HATPINS – Part 7

Turn of the twentieth century ladies wore hairstyles of long length, piled high on their heads, secured with sometimes elaborate combs in their daily living. When dressing for shopping, going to church, or simply “going out amongst them”, for whatever the reason, wide brimmed hats were an elegant additive for their long dresses/coats. These intricately designed hatpins which sparkled with elegance in their iridized finery completed their décor, making them “presentable” to the outside world.

BANDED BERRY CLUSTER:  Sometimes called Grape Cluster. Found in lavender and purple.
COQUI:  Perhaps this name translates to FROG in German? “Geschutzt” indicates a patent in German.
DOUBLE CROWN:  Seldom sells for much money; perhaps because of its brownish coloring?
FACETED BUTTERFLY:  Elegant black glass.
FERRIS WHEEL:  Somewhat scarce, these have sold in the $500. range.
HORSEFLY:  Unusual shape and very unusual subject for ornamentation in a ladies hair!
JUTE BRAID:  Sometimes called Basketweave variant. Selling price ranges from $80.-$400. in years past.
KNOTTY TREE BARK:  This blue example is quite striking in appearance.
LEAF and VEILING:  One wonders at the wide variance in price. One sold in 1995 for $75, while another brought $675!
MARVELOUS:  A dark five-petal pin surrounded by rhinestones in a gold setting create an unusual hatpin. One sold for $500. in 1995.
SPIRAL DANCE:  The facets are arranged in a spiral design. The price ranges from $40.-$100.
SPRING BUDS:  The design speaks for itself, but the smoke coloration is a bit unusual.
STAR and FLOWER:  A beautiful blue example sold for $1000. in 1995.
THREE FLOWERS:  Collectors report that a similar hatpin called Two Flowers was produced in West Germany in the 1950s. Perhaps this striking example is from the same era?

Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word,
In conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity.
Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with
the laying on of the hands of the eldership.
Meditate on these things; give yourself entirely to them, that your progress
may be evident to all.
Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine.
Continue in them, for in doing this you will save both yourself and those who hear you.
(1 Timothy 4:12-16)
