February 28, 2009 Auction - “A LETTERED Event”

Auctions come and auctions go, but this recent Jim Wroda sale can more accurately be termed “an event” where 136 Advertising and Commemorative Carnival Glass items were sold, along with 72 Goofus Glass, various product boxes and containers; as well as some clear glass items displaying advertising.

It was a real treat to view paper receipts/verification of entities known to have provided company names familiar to all of us who collect these lettered relics of long-ago. Prices for the 5 Goofus items ranged from $95. to $125. Overall, a wide range of prices were paid for these unusual items. The highest prices went for a wooden Davidson's Chocolates box at $55. and a wooden Fern Brand Chocolates box, or pencil box brought $65!

Dan and Cheryl Gentry had collected these precious elements of days gone by, over a long period of time. Cheryl is the daughter of Sam Wolfe. Sam was one of the pioneers of carnival glass collecting/writing, predating the days of Don Moore, John & Lucile Britt and Emma Tilton.

Considering that this extensive accumulation would not very likely be together again during our lifetime, we decided to provide this grouping of 20 items, with Dean having taken the photos. We hope that you enjoy and appreciate the time required to bring all these objects together. A debt of gratitude is owed to the Gentry's for their interest and determination!

When John Resnik wrote his 1989 Encyclopedia of Carnival Glass Lettered Pieces, his conclusion stated that the horseshoe logo on that Advertising piece did not indicate an association to the product. He believed Jockey Club to be a perfume. Now we have a perfume bottle to confirm that!

Re: Penny and Gentles. We talked with Craig Heeley during the auction preview and he confirms existence of one known bowl having that Advertising. Craig is second generation collector, as well. His parents, Bud and Betty Heeley were avid collectors of Carnival Glass as early as the 1950s.

Price results are included with each photograph. When considering the time element involved in accumulating these fairly obscure validations of our beloved carnival glass elements, actual value is enormous!
