IMPERIAL VASES - Part 4
![]() FREEFOLD: With so many pattern names surrounding either rays or ribs, the earlier name: Interior Rays somehow added to the confusion. Mr. Ray Notley of England, once a prolific writer/researcher decided upon the very appropriate name of FREEFOLD. He is to be commended for his insight. The flowing folds atop this vase are like no other vase. Tiny rounded knobs atop each mound of glass lend nicely to the interior ray patterning. The outer surface is smooth and without pattern.
The catalog page clearly notes the approximately 1” of glass above the marie where there are no rays.
After “swinging”, these vases vary in height from 7” to 14”. There must have been a couple of molds used to make them because one has a base diameter of nearly 3” with a 12-point star molded into the outside of the marie. The other base diameter known is 3 ¼”, having a 16-point star in the base. (We display examples of each type vase.)
Very few of the flared mold shape (the one we display offers the 12-point base star) squatty vases are known. One sold at auction in 2006. This marigold example stands only 4 ¼” tall.
Marigold and purple vases are seen more often than other colors, but as compared to many other vase patterns, Freefold examples can be considered rather scarce overall. Celeste, clambroth, helios, lavender, smoke and white are other known colors in the pattern. Iridescence is excellent in most cases, and since many collectors do not give these vases much notice, prices can be quite reasonable.
![]() ![]() GOTHIC ARCHES: is one of the most rare vases in all of carnival glass. Years pass before examples surface at an auction! Marigold and smoke are the only colors known. Heights can range from 10” to 19”. Generally speaking, the 10”-16 ½” vases would be considered “standard” size, with the 17”-19” referred to as “funeral” sizes. Imperial Catalog 104A displays the larger size vase on page 59A-in crystal, of course.
A smoke vase sold in 2003 on eBay for $385. We have not seen one listed on a carnival glass auction brochure in the years since.
Another RARE! - so WHAT?? (smile)
