Fenton Red - Part 2
FENTON  RED - Part 2

 RED HOLLY PLATE: This statement is intended to clarify the status: A “red Holly “plate form” sold over eBay for more than $5000 in 2005.  This is not to say that we believe it to have been other than a “former bowl”, re-heated and re-formed in other than original factory surroundings.
A prominent collector who has been active in carnival glass circles since the 1950s has owned “the only recognizably authentic factory produced, red Holly plate for at least 40 years!” The leading Holly pattern collector in the United States offered $32,000 for that plate 20 years before ANY piece of carnival glass had ever sold for that amount!!!!! The lady refused. That plate remains in her collection today.
You will find that the one which sold over eBay is shown on another carnival glass site, advertised as the “first known”.  The true  facts  are presented in our statement. We have known the owner of the “first known authentic” red Holly plate for many years!

HOLLY GOBLET and COMPOTE:  The goblet, or (side straight up) example displays the extremely dark red top and a supreme example of amberina on stem/base.
The two angles of the compote are quite different in coloration, as well. This occurs in the firing process. One too many firings will create a silvery finish on the red.

Would you believe-this is a red PEACOCK @ URN Compote!.
Only when held against light, can most of the red PEACOCK @ URN Compotes be seen as red!.
Would you believe this is a red PEACOCK @ URN Compote?
Only when held against light, can most of the red PEACOCK @ URN Compotes be seen as red!.

PEACOCK @ URN: Compote is one of the most difficult pieces of red Fenton to acquire. More than five years will pass without an example offered in any of the many carnival glass auctions! To locate one with outstanding red glass is quite unlikely. They are always on the very dark side, having to hold them to bright light for determination of the base color. In our more than 30 years of attending auctions, we have not seen a cherry red example.

HORSE CHESTNUT or BERRY & LEAF CIRCLE Exterior of Red LEAF CHAIN BOWL.

LEAF CHAIN:   6”-7 ½” bowls are occasionally found in red. Most will reveal an amberina center. For one with clear, bright red base and good iridescence, you could expect to pay in excess of $1000.

HORSE CHESTNUT: This delightful exterior pattern always creates added interest on any piece of Fenton Glass, no matter the shape/pattern/color.

STIPPLED RAYS -  5.5 inch Bowl with SCALE BAND Ext. in Red - Amberina.

STIPPLED RAYS: Several 6” bowls in red will surface over a five year period, with varying degrees of good red. Plates in this 6”-7” size are another matter. Red ones are very scarce, with most of them being quite dark red with silvery iridescence. A good cherry red plate will sell for $2000 or more. The red bowls bring considerably less, according to the vibrancy of color presented.

LITTLE FLOWERS:  These are not plentiful in red, but most examples are more accurately described as amberina. We have only seen one “true cherry red” Little Flowers 10” bowl over the years! Price ranges are wide and varied, according to the “tastes” of the buyers.

Dean & Diane Fry - 12/06

He who comes from above is above all;
he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth.
He who comes from heaven is above all.
And what He has seen and heard,
that He testifies; and no one receives His testimony.
He who has received His testimony has certified that God is true.
For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God,
for God does not give the Spirit by measure.
The Father loves the Son, and has given all things into His hand.
He who believes in the Son has everlasting life;
and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.    (John 3:31-36)
