CROWN CRYSTAL -- Part 4

We sincerely hope that the ability to identify many of these designs will encourage your expansion of collecting interests. The native flora and fauna of the Australian landscape displayed on this carnival glass will provide diversity in a collection. Our Australian friends certainly include the American-made designs in their accumulation of Glass. Although not readily available as we trek along the path to “finds”, many times carnival glass auction brochures will have a few selections to offer. Close scrutiny will reveal their distinct beauty, and for those of us who enjoy a wide variety of patterns in our collection, the Crown Crystal pieces certainly lend a share of joy.

KOOKABURRA Float Bowl - round: There is no written matter to tell us whether dark or marigold examples are more prevalent. Shape and color preference is certainly a personal matter to collectors. There is something for everyone!

KOOKABURRA Float Bowl - ruffled: Large 11” round bowls always display the designs more eminently, although there are as many collectors who prefer the ruffled shape.

KOOKABURRA 5” Bowl: This marigold example was found in early 2006, having no Registration number. There are no such bowls shown in the Carnival Glass of Australia Book, leading us to believe that at the time that book was copyrighted in 1988, one of these bowls was yet to be discovered. Both 5” designs of this pattern found on pages 15 and 16 carry a Registration #4184. We appreciate the fact that Glenn Thomas forwarded two nice views of his discovery for all of us to enjoy!


SWAN Master Bowl. The four sprigs of flowers are Christmas Bells. Occasionally a plain round edged bowl has been located. Note: Fern & Wattle Exterior.	SWAN (9 in.) design was registered just over one year after the Kookaburra on Jan. 16th, 1924. Note: Plain Exterior.

SWAN: The four sprigs of flowers are called Christmas Bells. A plain round edged bowl is located occasionally. Swan bowls can be found having no reverse pattern, as well as an exterior design called Fern and Wattle.


(Dark) SWAN 5 in. Bowl found with and without the registration number. Other small Swan has Clouds above bird.	Exterior of 9-9.5 inch SWAN is FERN & WATTLE. (6 frond and leaf design.)


BUTTERFLY BOWER - 6 1/4 inch with PLAIN Interior.	Exterior of BUTTERFLY BOWER -Quilted Diamond Exterior.

BUTTERFLY BOWER Bowl: Displays plain interior.

QUILTED DIAMOND Exterior: A large variation in the diameter of these pieces is a result of hand finishing. Broken Chain is another exterior pattern found on some Butterfly Bower bowls.

(Dark) EMU - This 5 in. Sauce has slight pattern

variations from 9 in. size. No exterior pattern.

EMU: This small 5” Emu has slight pattern variations to those used on the 9” size Emu bowl. Pages 6 and 7 of the Carnival Glass of Australia book, now out of print, display diagrams of both bowls.

STAR and DRAPE 1 Pint Jug in Marigold

STAR and DRAPE: Jug, 1 pint size stands 5” high. Crown Crystal Catalog No. 2860 displays a 2 pint jug, none have been found iridized. This 1 pint size is known in marigold. The bottom has a 24 rayed star pattern.
